I'm Ishigaki, director of the ORIMASK Laboratory. Here, we want to do a quick evaluation of the filter materials that anyone can get and use in a mask. We will also conduct experiments to improve collection efficiency by electrically and physically treating the filter. I work from home, so I make my own research equipment in the kitchen. In the following, we introduce our equipment, all of which we borrowed free of charge. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you. Experiments are displayed in the order of newest. To make it easier for the general public to read, I have written the results and discussion first, and the experimental methods later.

Fig.5

  • 濃度範囲:0~12000μm2/cm30~106pt/cm3

Experiment 3-1 Evaluation of distance, voltage, time, temperature, and individual differences in the corona discharge (preliminary experiment)

A nonwoven fabric sample (Asahi Kasei Eltus® P03050, thickness 0.38 mm) used in ORIMASK was placed on a grounded stainless steel plate, discharged evenly with a corona discharge bar manufactured by Greentechno, and then left overnight to eliminate static electricity. The experimental protocol is in accordance with Experiment 2. We investigated the differences in collection efficiency by varying the experimental conditions such as distance, applied voltage, discharge time and temperature conditions. The results were shown in Fig.3-1, and it was found that the collection efficiency of the particles above 0.3[um] varied greatly with the experimental conditions. In order to improve the collection efficiency, a shorter distance of 10 cm rather than 15 cm tends to be better, and the applied voltage tends to be 20 to 30 kv. No significant difference in discharge time was observed in either 3 or 10 seconds, and there was no difference between individuals when the samples were divided in half. In the regions of particle size ≥2um and ≥5um, there were few background particles and the total value of the particle counter was less than 10 counts, so the values were uneven. However, it is estimated that the collection efficiency exceeds 90% under all coronal discharge conditions. The detailed conditions for each experiment are as follows.

Experiment 3-2 Evaluation of collection efficiency under optimal conditions (this experiment)

Following the results of Experiment 3-1, the experiment was conducted with the same method as Experiment 3-1 with a short discharge distance of 1 cm and an applied voltage of 25 KV. This time, however, in order to keep the distance as short as 1 cm, a corona discharge gun made by Green Techno was used for corona discharge. Since the number of electrodes and the amount of current of the corona discharge gun are 1/8 and 1/4 of those of the corona discharge bar, the discharge time was set at 3 min and longer than in Experiment 3-1, assuming that the amount of ions produced by the corona discharge would also decrease to 1/32. The experimental results are shown in Fig. 3-2. Even with untreated orimask nonwoven fabric, the collection efficiency of particle size ≥2um is about 75% and 45% for particle size ≥0.3um. The corona discharge treatment of the olimask nonwoven fabric as described above significantly improved the collection efficiency of the particle size ≥ 2um to about 95% and the collection efficiency of the particle size ≥ 0.3um to about 80%. It was suggested that the collection efficiency of the particle size ≥ 0.3um could be improved to more than 95% by layering four orimask nonwoven fabrics. The details of each sample are as follows.

Experiment 2: A follow-up experiment in which the airflow velocity was increased to 7 cm/sec.

Experiment 2-1 Comparison between commercial masks and general-purpose nonwoven fabrics

We obtained N95 masks (manufactured by 3M) and commercial masks with a BFE collection efficiency of more than 95%, so in addition to the materials used in Experiment 1, we performed a follow-up experiment. The results are shown in Fig.2-1, 3M's N95 mask showed more than 95% collection efficiency at a particle size ≥ 0.3um. and the performance of 3M's N95 mask is consistent with the standard. This suggests that there was no air leakage in our evaluation system and the measurement was performed correctly. Overall, as in Experiments 1-1, the corona treatment improved the collection efficiency. For example, the collection efficiency of the sprit-top nonwoven fabric was about three times higher after corona treatment. As a whole, the airflow velocity of the evaluation system was increased and the measured values were lower than those of Experiment 1. We measured a mask labeled "BFE (bacterial filtration efficiency) 95% or more" , and the collection efficiency for particle size ≥ 0.3um was less than 40%. The performance of this mask is only about three tissues if you look at the collection efficiency alone, and it is questionable whether it is sufficient as a mask. In Japan, there is no legal regulation or guideline on how to indicate the collection efficiency, and it is possible to over-indicate the collection efficiency by experimental conditions such as air velocity and test particles. Therefore, it can be said that it is necessary to be careful when purchasing. The details of each sample are as follows.
*It is difficult to compare the collection efficiency of each sample with that of the other because of the large error in the measurement of particle size ≥5 [um] in Fig.2-1.

Evaluation Method

The measurement conditions and evaluation protocol of the evaluation system are the same as in Experiment 1. However, the speed of the ventilation line was improved by reducing the size of the jigs. The fabrication process of the new jig is shown in Fig.2-2(a), the whole image of the experimental system without filter is shown in Fig.2-2(b), and the enlarged image of the jig with filter measurement is shown in Fig.2-2(c). The jig was assembled in the following order, starting from the intake port of the Rion handheld particle counter KC-52.
1. inlet rubber packing (rubber tube for stretching exercise was cut, orange; both are hidden in Fig. 2-2(a)(b)(C))2. small plastic funnel (yellow)3. silicon filter packing (cut the stamp mat, yellow green)4. silicon filter packing (cut the stamp mat, yellow green), same as 35. small plastic funnel (same one as 2)6. four rubber bands for binding the above mentioned jigs 2-57. water sealing tape (white) to prevent air leakage from the above-mentioned jig 1-2
The background (B/G) is measured using the jig shown in 1-7 above. When the filter performance is measured, the filter sample to be measured is sandwiched between jigs 3 and 4 as shown in Fig. 1-4(c).Here we compare the ventilation line velocities in Experiments 1 and 2. The ventilation flow rate of KC-52 is 2.83 [L/min] = 2830 [cm^3/min] = 47.167 [cm^3/sec.]. Since the diameter of the filter used in Experiment 1 is φ77 [mm], its ventilation area is 38.5 [mm] ^2 * pi=46.57 [cm^2], therefore, the ventilation line velocity is 1 [cm/sec.]. Since the diameter of the filter used in Experiment 2 is φ29 [mm], its ventilation area is 14.5 [mm] ^2 * pi = 6.6 [cm^2], therefore the ventilation line velocity is 7 [cm/sec.], which is 7 times of the condition in Experiment 1.

Experiment 1-1. Non-woven fabric

We collected polypropylene (PP) nonwovens, which are relatively easy to obtain at 100-yen shops, and examined their collection performance. It is known that corona discharge of PP nonwoven fabric forms an electric polarization (electrets) in the fibers, which can adsorb fine particles by semi-permanent static electricity, and is widely used in high-performance masks (Meisei 2013, Ando 1994, 1996, 2007). It is also said that rubbing different materials causes frictional charging and improves collection efficiency (Nakamura et al. 2007). Therefore, we investigated the change in collection efficiency by corona discharge treatment of nonwoven fabrics and rubbing of nylon products which have different electrical charges from PP.As shown in Fig. 1-1, the corona treatment significantly improved the collection efficiency. There was no significant difference in the corona treatment time between 3 and 10 seconds. The fact that the collection efficiency was improved only by scrubbing with a toothbrush, which is available to everyone, is useful. The low effect of the stocking rubbing may be due to the lack of sufficient pressure on the nonwoven fabric. Overall, ELTAS has the highest dust collection efficiency, and it is hoped that rubbing this material will further increase the collection efficiency of 0.3um particles to over 90%. The details of each sample are described below.

*In samples 5 and 6, we chose nylon products to be rubbed as the stable material whose charging rate (+) is farthest from PP in order to obtain efficient frictional charging. It has been reported that by rubbing a product with a nylon brush mixed with carbon black to make it conductive while connecting it to the ground, the charge generated by frictional charging can be released to the ground without being saturated on the brush , and it can be charged without being limited by the size of the sheet material to be rubbed (Nakamura et al. 2017).*The corona discharge treatment of samples 3-4 and 7 was carried out with the experimental equipment of Kasuga Electric Co.

Experiment 1-2: Tissues, kitchen papers and medical drapes

We investigated the collection performance of tissue kitchen paper, commonly known as a material for handmade masks, and medical drapes (video) proposed by doctors in Connecticut, USA. According to Nikkei BP's article on the "HK mask" allegedly devised by Dr. Kenneth Kwong Si-san in Hong Kong and information on Twitter believed to be his, the collection efficiency of 0.3um particles is 45.75% for one tissue, 69.20%-70.10% for two tissues, 83.00% for three tissues, 73.70% for one kitchen paper and 89.20-91.30% for two kitchen papers, which are close to the collection performance of the N95 mask. As shown in Fig.1-2, the collection efficiency of 0.3um particles was less than 40% for three tissue papers and less than 50% for two kitchen papers, which were far from the performance of N95. It is thought that more than three sheets of kitchen paper can not be used as a mask because the air intake resistance is obviously large.Although the materials used in this experiment may differ from those sold in Hong Kong, the use of tissue/kitchen paper as a mask material, at least in Japan, is not recommended unless an alternative is available. As for the medical drapes two layers, they have a collection efficiency of nearly 60% for 0.3um particles, low physical absorption resistance, sterile treatment, and high water repellency, making them a promising material for use as a substitute for masks in hospitals. The details of the samples used in this experiment are described below.

Evaluation Method

An overview of the evaluation system is shown in Fig.1-4(a), and an enlarged view of the jigs is shown in Fig.1-4(b). Assemble the jig in the following order, starting from the intake part of the KC-52 handheld particle counter made by RION. Since our laboratory is located in the kitchen of our house, we cannot prepare standard particles, and we do not have the facilities to maintain a constant concentration of B/G particles. Therefore, the collection efficiency of the filter is estimated by comparing the number of B/G particles naturally present in the environment with the count of particles obtained through the filter. All jigs were purchased at 100 yen shop and made by myself.1. inlet rubber packing (cut rubber tube for stretching exercise, orange)2. plastic funnel3. silicon filter packing (cut the center of the silicon lid for the pot)4. silicone filter packing (cut the center of the silicone lid for the pot), same as 3.5. plastic funnel (same one as 2)6. four rubber bands for binding the above mentioned jigs 2-5Background (B/G) is measured by using the jig shown in 1-6 above. When the filter performance is measured, the filter sample to be measured is sandwiched between jigs 3 and 4 as shown in Fig. 1-4(c).

The settings (measurement conditions) of the KC-52 manufactured by RION are as follows.<Measurement conditions>
  • Measurement mode: Volume
  • Volume: 0.283 liters
  • Time:manual
  • Average: 3
  • Measured particle size: 0.3um, 0.5um, 1.0um, 2.0um, 5.0um
  • Measurement value display method: Cumulative display, /L
The sample filter is measured using a protocol consisting of the following 14 items. The measured values are recorded in five sets: [0.3um display value, 0.5um display value, 1.0um display value, 2.0um display value, and 5.0um display value].<Evaluation protocol>1. Construction of the B/G evaluation system shown in Fig.1-4(a)2. Measure (18 sec.) for ventilation operation → ignore the data3. Actual measurement (18 sec.) → Take the BG1 value4. Construction of the filter evaluation system shown in Fig.1-4(c)5. Measurement (18 sec.) for ventilation operation → ignore the data6. Actual measurement (18 sec.) → Take the filter measurement value F7. Construction of the B/G evaluation system shown in Fig.1-4(a)8. measurement (18 sec.) for ventilation operation → ignore the data9. Actual measurement (18 sec.) → Take BG2 value10. Only once, as long as the requirements of step 11, described below, are met, the experiment may be performed with the filter sample switched back to step 7.11. If steps 1-10 above cannot be performed within 3 min. or if the values of BG1 and BG2 (one or more of the four sets of values) differ by 15% or more, return to step 1 and repeat the measurement.12. For each particle size, calculate the filter collection efficiency e = {(1-F/(BG1+BG2)}13. If the next measurement can be made within 3 min after the completion of step 11, omit step 1 and start measurement from step 4 (in this case, substitute the BG2 value obtained in step 8 for the BG1 value that should have been made in step 3).14. Return to step 1 or end the experiment.
*If two funnels are assumed to be 10 cm spheres, the volume is about 0.315 liters, which is considered to be sufficient since more than two ventilation operations are performed by simple calculation.*We compared them in step 11 and calculated the average value in step 12, assuming a large change in B/G before and after the filter measurement.
